Today I had a great partner lesson with two eighth-graders. I forgot how even “big kids” love to play games. We drilled on interval flashcards while taking turns moving along a board game. It was competitive and intense, and by the end, they were so quick on naming intervals!
I’m sharing a free downloadable board game you can use with any question set you like, either physical flashcards, a Quizlet set, exercises on Tenuto, or even right out of the repertoire. Have students answer a question or play a section of the piece they are learning or reviewing in order to move along the game board. Lightly Rowing will have students island hopping towards the mainland, avoiding pirates, and looking for treasure.
Since I’ve been focusing on intervals in my lessons these past few weeks, I’m including a set of flashcards you can use that quiz students on melodic intervals from unison to octave. You can remove any intervals you haven’t covered from the stack, or you can create a never-ending flashcard set on musictheory.net to your exact parameters, including interval size, type, and quality. (Click here for a digital version of the printable flashcards below.)
For best results, print the flashcards double-sided on cardstock paper and laminate them for durability.
