Music Theory Lesson: Quarter Note or Half Note?
Beginning ear training exercise on rhythmic dictation
I am back to lessons at my studio tomorrow, so I have spent the last few weeks on lesson plans and creating new activities and resources for my beginning and returning students. I hope you find the latest upload to the Violin Club YouTube channel helpful. It is a mini-lesson on clapping and aurally differentiating quarter notes and half notes.
In this video, we will learn the difference between quarter notes and half notes. To quiz your students, you can download the free printable worksheet by clicking the image below:
I want to make sure my students’ music theory and aural skills are sharp this upcoming semester! A few of my students will be taking the TMTA Whitlock Theory Tests in February, so they must be prepared. If you’d like to integrate more listening exercises in your studio this school year, check out my post with a suggested progression for ear training activities:
I also talked about musictheory.net in last week’s post on treble clef reading skills. You can use musictheory.net or its Tenuto iOS app to create tons of customizable and interactive music theory exercises for your students.
What are your go-to resources for teaching music theory and ear training to your students? Please share in the comments below or follow Violin Club on social media and let’s continue the conversation.
