If you are new here to Violin Club, you’ll soon find out that games are my favorite way to teach new concepts. Many young violin students learn “The Flower Song” as a Pre-Twinkle piece, and that inspired this free board game and set of flashcards.
Like the other Violin Club games which you can find here and here, this game board can be used with any set of flashcards or questions you would like to review. Have students answer a question or even play a section of the piece they are learning or reviewing in order to roll and move along the game board. Flower Factory will have students racing to color in the most flower petals on their score card to win.
I’m including a free set of treble clef flashcards you can use for this game that cover all the lines and spaces in the first position. To play the game with younger or beginning students, simply remove the notes they have not yet covered from the stack. The flashcards are also great for a “60 Second Challenge”-type activity to reinforce note reading.
For best results, print the flashcards double-sided on cardstock paper and laminate them for durability.
If you are in a hurry, out of printer ink, or just prefer to save paper, the Tenuto app is a game-time lifesaver. You can download it from the Apple app store to your device for a small fee, or use it on your web browser at musictheory.net for free! You can quiz students on note names, intervals, key signatures, and more, and customize each exercise for their level of knowledge. Click on the image below to go to the digital version of the printable flashcards above and bookmark it for use in your lessons.
